Box in maki-e lacquered wood and cross inlay - Early 20th c. Meiji/Taisho 1910/1920.

Superb varnished and lacquered wood box (letter box) with inlaid hira-zogan decoration of crosses and geometric elements.
The inside of the box is made of maki-e simulating clouds.
Metal clasp with period leather fastener.
A perfectly preserved piece in the pure Nanban spirit, with decoration inspired by the decorative elements also found on Japanese sword mounts.
A creation of the early 20th c. 1910/1920
