Kakejiku (kakemono), ink painting of a macaque monkey and its young by Baien.
Baien is a gō (an artist's name) common in late Edo and early Meiji Japanese painting. Here, probably a Shijō or Maruyama school painter specializing in animals.
The work is fine, expressive, with a beautiful bristle technique and gentle treatment of the rocks: this is good Kyoto animal painting, often prized in the West.
Nice realization.
Kakejiku alone, but working in tandem with an exemplary seconf also on sale from Kogeiya.
Late Edo 19th c / early Meiji (1860/1870).
