Onko-yaki ceramic netsuke depicting a hyottoko mask, a comic figure from Japanese folk theater.
The face features the round "O" mouth characteristic of the character who blows into a pipe to fan the fire, but here in a more stylized version than usual. A more "human" version, in fact.
Beautifully realized in ceramic.
Signed.
