Until March 25, 2024, the Musée Guimet is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the Dit du Genji, written by the poet Murasaki Shikibu in the 11th century, transporting you to the Heian period (794-1185). This fascinating period reveals an artistic universe where women's freedom gave rise to an exceptionally rich artistic production. During this era, a unique women's literature emerged, marking the history of Japan.

With this exhibition entitled "At the Court of Prince Genji", explore an incredibly diverse iconography, including lacquers, prints, fabrics, kimonos, sculptures, paintings and precious objects from the Musée Guimet as well as French and Japanese collections. This exhibition reveals how the Tale of Genji has inspired artists and craftsmen for a thousand years, even influencing new art forms such as manga, which inventively reinterpret scenes - particularly in the yamato-e style - and themes from this iconic story.

The second part of the exhibition highlights the exceptional work of Itarô Yamaguchi (1901-2007), a master weaver from Kyoto. His four exceptional woven scrolls depicting the Tale of Genji, the fruit of a lifetime devoted to weaving, are revealed for the first time in their entirety.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to delve into the history of Japanese art through the world of Genji.
