Print by Utagawa Yoshitora (-1880) from the "Seichū meimei den" ("Biographies of the Valiant and Loyal Samurai") series, prints depicting the 47 rōnin (wandering samurai).
Plate depicting Hōda Kawachi no Kami Mon, one of the 47 wandering samurai.

The written text is about this key figure in Japanese history:

"This warrior, known asItami Kawachi-no-kami, was renowned for his extraordinary abilities: his martial training and courage surpassed those of most officers. Calm and resolute in action, he possessed a deep sense of loyalty and righteousness.
When their lord Asano was condemned to seppuku after the incident in the great gallery of Edo Castle, he was so distraught that he could not hold back his tears.
Even after being placed under house arrest with a reduced income, he secretly harbored a burning anger and strengthened his resolve. He vowed to act in honor of his fallen lord, sometimes wearing a white band around his forehead or writing his intentions on small votive cards.
Living in seclusion, he continued his preparations and training, until one day, true to his oath, he joined the other avengers to bring justice to their master's enemy."
